![]() DURBAN |
Durban was one of my first rats and one of my most beloved... yes, I know I shouldn't pick favorites, but he was what people call a "heart rat" for me. He was born sometime late 2019 or early 2020 and adopted by me from EARPS in July of 2020 alongside his sister, Quip, and his cagemate, Gunther. They described him as a little "monster" (affectionate) He passed after a long battle with a pituitary tumor in June 2022. He loved his favorite pineapple hammock and cage cleaning days, when he'd popcorn around on the bare trays before they were filled with bedding. My little Durbie-Doo is sorely missed every day... |
![]() AREQUIPA |
Arequipa, otherwise known as Quip, was Durban's sister and adopted from EARPS in 2020 at the same time as him and Gunther (all the rats from that rescue are spayed & neutered, so no worries there). She was super feisty and loved chewing up anything in her way, whether it was hammocks or cage trays... or hands!! She is the only female rat I've ever had and she was so energetic that, while I love her, she solidified my preference for boys! She passed suddenly in 2022, Durban missed her very much and so did I. It was my first time seeing a rat mourne. I hope they're together again. |
![]() GUNTHER |
Gunther was adopted alongside Durban and Quip! He was the one I asked for by name, the others were adopted because I asked for his two favorite cagemates. He was very skittish, probably an ex-feeder and suffering from poor eyesight, and was a bit older than his cagemates from the very start. Nobody really knew his true age, though he was likely over a year by the time he came into my life in 2020. His favorite treat was unsweetened applesauce and while he did not want to be handled, he was a happy little man who loved nothing more than to play in their digbox or root around underneath fleece like a funny little mole. He passed about a month before Quip in 2022, likely from old age or kidney issues. |
![]() JERSEY |
Jersey Devil & Fresno Night Crawler were born in October of 2020 and adopted as kittens from a college student's accidental litter. It was explained that she only kept girls and that the pregnancy came out of nowhere... and given how they ended up being twice the size of any rat I've had, you can guess what their father might have been. They never enjoyed being handled, they were so bitey that I could never have rehomed them in good conscience, and eventually had to be housed on their own (but together) due to their high aggression with other rats (except for Durban, they adored him). I loved them all the same and I don't regret adopting them. They loved oatmeal and their favorite thing to do was shred cardboard and listen to my roommate's mother sing to them. She was the only person they seemed to care for at all! Jersey & Fresno passed of old age within a day of one another in March of 2023. |

![]() GRAHAM / GRAMGRAM |
GramGram wasn't a rat... she was a syrian hamster! I adopted her from an ex-Amish family through Craigslist (it was... an experience!) and had been kept in a tiny Walmart cage her entire life. The family's children handled her very roughly, as did their parents, to the point that she was terrified of hands when I adopted her. She came with no name, so I named her for her apparent old age. She was given a 40 gallon tank filled to the brim with bedding and enrichment once I got her and though it took several long months for her to accept treats directly from my hand, she thrived once given the space she truly needed and deserved. She was supposedly two or three years old when I adopted her in 2021 and she passed in early 2023. |
![]() GILBERT & EGG |
Egg & Gilbert were brothers that were rehomed when their previous owner's living situation changed sudenly in 2021. She loved them dearly and recieved updates about them throughout their lives, as she was heartbroken to give them up.
Gilbert was an overweight and very snuggly champagne dumbo while Egg had always been on the smaller and more playful side. Egg especially loved tobe spoken or sang to, resting with his face turned towards the source and bruxing. Gilbert was very much a lap-rat, loving to be held and spoiled with gentle backrubs and ear srubbin's. Gilbert was found to have passed on August 11th 2023 (the anniversary of their adoption date, no less!) and Egg followed as I held him on November 2nd, 2023 after grieing for his brother for months. Gilbert was two years and four months old and Egg was two years and seven months. |
![]() GEMINI |
Babybabybabybabyboy GemGem was born on October 11th, 2022 and adopted from my local shelter, which I didn't know took rats, on December 30th, 2022. He was the last one left of his siblings and the only rat I've adopted alone, he was so tiny that I had to keep him seperated from the rest of my boys for almost a month! He was extremely snuggly and his favorite thing in the world was sleeping in my jacket sleeves. Like Durban, who he knew towards the end of the elder's life, he turned out to be another of my heart rats. He was always with me when I was home and he wasn't busy snoozing. It was almost like he liked people more than he did other rats! Gemini was put to sleep May 2nd of 2024 after complications from a large tumor. This photo is from 2022 when he was young and it is how I will always remember him. He had so much life left to live, it just wasn't fair... |
![]() VALERIE & AUGUSTINO |
Valerie is on the right and Augustino is pictured on the left!!
Augustino was the more shy of the two, he would squeak if he thought you were going to try touching him and preferred the company of his brother over anyone else, while Valerie was brave but somewhat stand-offish with everyone he met. They were born on February 15th, 2022, thus their named being Val & Tino! Augustino passed unexpectedly on August 1st 2023 after a sudden decline in health, just days before a vet appointment. His brother Valerie missed him dearly, snuggling up to Gemini at every chance he had up until his passing in early 2024 after complications caused by what was likely a stroke or brain tumor. |
![]() BEANS |
Beans and his brothers Onion, Peanut, and Allan were likely born sometime in early or mid December 2023 and were all brothers from a litter of five (they have a sister named Fiona living with their mother). They came to me on New Years Day of 2024!
I was meant to only be taking a pair of baby boys but the other potential adopter backed out last minute, so I took in all four brothers. Beans was the calmest of the brothers, always a little chunkier than the rest and more than eager to lay down for a good scrubbing. He loved to sleep in their giant metal wheel, enjoying the coolness of it. He was sent to the rainbow bridge on January 2nd (the day after their gotcha day...) after a brave fight against slow onset neurological issues, likely a pituitary tumor. |
